If you have a free day or a few hours during the week, the Habitat Orlando ReStore has many volunteer opportunities. There is a need for safe drivers to pick up donations, friendly volunteers to assist customers, and volunteers who like to organize to arrange incoming donations and help put items on display.
There are several different volunteer needs at the ReStore. Please see the list below for detailed volunteer job descriptions.
Volunteer Logistics scheduler: We need a friendly volunteer to assist in scheduling donation pick ups for our trucks, and in mapping routes, following up with donors, and making our donors feel appreciated. You need to be able to convey geniality and gracious appreciation over the phone, and to listen to our donor’s experiences. In return you get to be at the vanguard of our connection with the Orlando community that supports our mission.
Volunteer Logistics Associate: We are looking for a friendly, people-oriented person for pick-up of donated home improvement and home décor items. You get to talk to our donors and see first-hand the inspiring support we receive from the community for our mission. Also, must be able to lift 80 lbs and have a clean driving record.
Q: What should I wear to volunteer at the ReStore?
A: Comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty and closed toe shoes (athletic shoes or boots are best, no ballet slippers, heels, clogs, sandals, ect.)
Q: I’ll be there all day do you provide lunch?
A: The ReStore does not provide lunch, but there are several lunch options close by and there is a café and a McDonalds within walking distance. We also provide a refrigerator and microwave for your use.
Q: I am supposed to start my shift at 8:30 am but the store doesn’t open until 9:00 am. How do I get in?
A: The back door will be open or if not you can knock on the front door and we will let you in.
Q: I would love to get my family involved. Can I bring my kids along with me?
A: The minimum age to volunteer at the ReStore is 18. Sorry, no exceptions. However, please visit our volunteer page where you will find volunteer opportunities at our construction site which allows volunteers age 16 and older and also our youth program for younger kids.
Q: Can I bring a group to volunteer?
A: Certainly! We have groups of up to 15 people volunteer at the ReStore. Contact the store to set up a time for your group to volunteer. Please note all volunteer groups must be scheduled in advance.
Q: What will I be doing while I volunteer?
A: It varies. If you have signed up to do a certain job, please see our volunteer job descriptions. If you are coming as a general volunteer your tasks may include: helping unload donations from vehicles, moving items to the store floor, assisting in pricing items, assisting in creating displays, greeting customers/ answering questions, reorganizing/ cleaning departments, helping customers to their vehicles with their new purchases, and much more.
Q: How does my time help Habitat?
A: Every task a volunteer does replaces the time of paid staff. This means that you are keeping our overhead cost down, and allowing us to give more of the money spent at the Habitat ReStore to Habitat so we can build more homes!
Q: I have a special skill that I think would be helpful to Habitat, but I don’t see a category anywhere under the volunteer job descriptions. How can I help using that skill?
A: Contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Jennifer Gallagher, to find out where you can help. We (the ReStore and Habitat Orlando) can use all types of skills, from construction and administrative to artistic, and everything in-between.
Q: Where do I park?
A: Behind the building on the South side is a parking area. For larger groups you can park across the street in a neighboring businesses parking area. We have their permission and it is very safe.
Q: Where can I put my belongings?
A: We don’t have a secure area for personal belongings it is best to lock everything but your keys in your car.
Q: What if I can’t make it?
A: If there is any reason you are unable to volunteer for a time you signed up for please contact the ReStore as soon as possible.
